BOB COSTAS, JOEY CHEEK
HEADLINE 2006 NATIONAL SPORTSMANSHIP
AWARDS |
 A model of sportsmanship
at the 2006 Winter Olympics, Joey Cheek will be the featured
honoree at the 2006 National Sportsmanship Awards in St. Louis.
The speedskating gold and silver medalist will join NBC
sportscaster and local favorite Bob Costas for a live keynote
interview on stage at the Chase Park Plaza's Khorassan Ballroom.
Hosted by the Sports Commission and the Citizenship Through
Sports Alliance, the National Sportsmanship Awards will honor
the nation's top athletes and administrators who - like Cheek -
exemplify outstanding sportsmanship, citizenship, ethical
conduct and community service. Cheek made headlines in February
when he donated his medal prize money to the Right To Play
organization. This year's Awards Dinner takes place Saturday,
June 10. For ticket and sponsorship information, plus other
event details, click here or call 314-992-0686. The Sports
Commission salutes the Awards Dinner sponsors: First Bank; Sense
Corp; American Airlines; Regions Bank; Sporting News; Midwest
BankCentre; the St. Louis Rams; BJC HealthCare, Reproxdigital;
KMOX Radio; and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

SPORTSMANSHIP A HOT TOPIC ON CAPITOL
HILL |
A focus of the Sports Commission's
Youth Programs, sportsmanship is also receiving the attention of
Congress, which announced the formation of the Congressional
Youth Sports Caucus on April 27. The Sports Commission proudly
joined the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance, the National
Recreation and Park Association, and the Positive Coaching
Alliance for the kickoff in Washington. Chaired by Congressmen
Mike McIntyre of North Carolina and Kenny Hulshof of Missouri,
the caucus will work in a bipartisan fashion to promote the
values of sportsmanship, civility, respect, health, safety, fun
and fitness among players, coaches, parents, and officials. The
Sports Commission is playing that role locally, striving to make
St. Louis a model community for good sportsmanship. The
organization is implementing a series of initiatives to create
more positive environments for kids to play sports so that they
will remain active and lead healthier, happier lives. Among its
efforts, the Sports Commission is partnering with BJC HealthCare
to develop a sportsmanship report card for youth sports in St.
Louis. Surveys will soon go out to coaches, parents, athletes
and officials. The findings will be announced this summer.

SPORTS COMMISSION HELPS VOLUNTEERS COACH IT RIGHT AT
MARCH
CLINIC |

More than 50 volunteer youth coaches
attended the Sports Commission's "Coach it Right!" track &
field coaches clinic on March 11. The clinic took place at
Florissant Valley Community College and featured Olympic gold
medalist Ray Armstead, 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier LeVar
Anderson, and the master's indoor 400-meter world record holder
Denise McField. Coaches received tips on track & field
fundamentals, nutrition, sports psychology, and the importance
of sportsmanship. Throughout the year, the Sports Commission
organizes free "Coach it Right!" clinics that educate and
motivate volunteer youth coaches in various sports. The clinics
emphasize the value of sportsmanship and develop coaching skills
to help participants become better coaches, and in turn, lead to
more positive experiences for area children on the playing
field. Highlights and photos from the clinics can be found at stlsports.org/kids.
