FOUR OF COUNTRY’S TOP NCAA DIVISION I LACROSSE PROGRAMS COMING TO ST. LOUIS

ST. LOUIS — Sept. 26, 2002 — The University of Denver, Duke University, University of Notre Dame and Towson University men’s lacrosse teams are all coming to St. Louis to play in the 2nd Annual St. Louis Fall Face-Off. The round-robin event will be held Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002 at the Anheuser-Busch Sports Centre in Fenton, Mo. The two featured games — Notre Dame vs. Duke and Towson vs. Denver — will face off at noon and 2 p.m. respectively.

"In just its second year, the St. Louis Fall Face-Off has become a nationally recognized collegiate lacrosse event," says Tournament Director Mike Sennett, a former player, team captain and 1991 University of Notre Dame graduate. "Having four teams of this caliber visit St. Louis is a testament to the quality of lacrosse being played in this area and to the respect St. Louis is now receiving across the country. Every team coming to town will be a factor in who qualifies for this year’s NCAA tournament."

Towson University is one of the most storied programs in all of collegiate lacrosse. Coached by three-time National Coach of the Year and former Team USA coach Tony Seaman, the Tigers made it to the Final Four of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Led by a talented group of returning lettermen, Towson is expected to go far in this year’s national championships.

The University of Notre Dame is returning to the St. Louis Fall Face-Off for the second straight year. Qualifiers in nine of the past 11 NCAA Championships and a Final Four participant in 2001, Head Coach Kevin Corrigan owns one of the top winning percentages in all of college lacrosse. This year’s Fighting Irish squad should uphold Notre Dame’s winning tradition.

Defending ACC Champion Duke University has long been a national power in college lacrosse. Coached by Mike Pressler in his 13th season, the Blue Devils have qualified for the NCAA Tournament nine times during his tenure. Currently, Coach Pressler is ranked fifth nationally among active coaches in career winning percentage (.716).

The University of Denver is an up-and-coming program playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. In his fifth season at Denver, Coach Jamie Munroe — a former NCAA All-American and top assistant at Yale — the Pioneers promise to break into the Top-20 and appear ready to contend for an NCAA playoff spot.

"Top to bottom, this is the strongest field of any tournament being played in the country this fall," concluded Sennett. "No event like it has ever been held anywhere in the Midwest."

The St. Louis Fall Face-Off is sponsored by the St. Louis Sports Commission. Proceeds benefit the Commission’s St. Louis Sports Foundation / Sports for Kids program and initiatives to support youth amateur lacrosse throughout the greater St. Louis metropolitan area and Missouri.
