For more information, contact: Marc Schreiber SPORTS COMMISSION HOSTS FREE SPORTS CAREER DAY FOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FRIDAY ST. LOUIS Feb. 26, 2003 The future Joe Bucks, Walt Jockettys, Mark Sauers, and Bob Wallaces of the sports world all had to start somewhere. What better way for high school students to get a jump start in the industry than to take part in the St. Louis Sports Career Day, one of the St. Louis Sports Commissions Community & Youth Programs. Sports Career Day takes place Friday (Feb. 28) at Kirkwood High Schools Keating Auditorium. Open to high school students, the event offers them a chance to learn about career opportunities in the sports industry and obtain advice and support from professionals working in a variety of fields, including sports marketing, medicine, administration & management, and media. The free seminar is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Students can register by calling 314-992-0689. "We are proud to offer this opportunity to high school students in the St. Louis area," said Troye Frank, director of the Sports Commissions Community & Youth Programs. "It shows them that chances for a career in sports exist away from the playing field. We hope that this event leads the students in the right direction in relation to their career goals." Glenn Doughty, president and CEO of the Career Lane Network, will serve as the keynote speaker for Sports Career Day. Doughty, a former NFL All-Pro for the Baltimore Colts, leads the web-based career information company created to promote careers in sports as well as provide career information to universities, corporations, and non-profit organizations nationally. Dave Miller, HOK Architecture & Design vice president, will make a presentation on careers in sports architecture. HOK is a leading design firm for sports arenas and multipurpose venues worldwide. Other speakers include: Post-Dispatch columnist Bryan Burwell, Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin, and Saint Louis University mens soccer coach Dan Donigan. In all, 43 area sports professionals will participate in Sports Career Day an event the Sports Commission created in 2000 and is hosting for the third time.
